If there’s one drum making question that never seems to get completely answered here at Guerrilla Drum Making, it’s the question of how much — how much will drum making cost?
Whether you want to build a 5 piece drum set or make a snare drum, just about everyone seems curious to know how much drum making “really costs.”
The answer is (drum roll please)………….

Your costs for a drum making project depend on whether you’re buying completely new products or not, and also largely depends on how many drums you’re making. That said, we’ve come up with an average cost based off of three drum making projects for building an ENTIRE DRUM KIT. The average cost is about $1,000.00
Keep in mind of course that your budget might be considerably different. For example, you could cut your cost down to $500 by simply using drum hardware that you already have. Fluctuations in currency can also have a dramatic effect on your drum making costs, as well as shipping prices.
Still, if you’re in the planning stage of a drum making project, hopefully these printable spreadsheets and drum making product expense numbers will prove helpful. Although the drum makers below are hypothetical, these numbers and spreadsheets are not; and the stories are based on customers who have emailed us and told us their expenses and drum making stories.
First up is Jason’s handy drum making spreadsheet, which breaks down his first time drum making purchases for all new shells, drum hardware and finishing materials. This includes the few tools and supplies needed as well, since Jason doesn’t have a thing!
Jason is making a 4 piece drum set, aiming for an eye catching Green stain with a thick tung oil finish, alternating black and brass tube lugs with matching tension rods and floating tom systems. Jason ended up spending around $1,428.00 and now has a completely new custom drum set.

While those might not be the particular drum making items that run up your budget, SOMETHING will.
Another helpful set of numbers comes from drum making first timer Chris, who is re-making his 5 piece drum set. Chris ended up using his current drum set which cut down a lot of cost on shells and hardware, and is simply giving that baby a drum making facelift with a very nice Birdseye wood veneer stained black with a satin finish. Besides already having drum shells and hardware, he also has a few necessary supplies which also cut back on his costs (he doesn’t need a drill either since his shells are already drilled). His total drum making project ends up being about $560.00.

Our third and last drum making lab rat Keith is re-wrapping a PDP drum set that he bought a few months ago off of Ebay that cost him $449.00. Not only does Keith want to re-wrap the drums and give it a more customized look, he found some new custom lugs to replace the current lugs (the new hardware fits his drill holes). Keith doesn’t need too many tools but does have to invest in a few new supplies for his project. His entire drum making project cost about $870.00.

As you can see, all of these drum making expenses fall within an unofficial drum making price of about $1,000. As we stated, your drum making project could be much higher based on your drum making goals. And as you’ve seen, it can be much lower as well.
